What does vaping cost?
Vaping is substantially cheaper than smoking. Australia has the highest cigarette prices in the world and the tobacco tax has risen 12.5% every year on September 2018, 2019, and 2020. A pack-a-day smoker (20 cigarettes of the leading brand) spends $10,580 per year on smoking.
The cost of vaping depends on the vaping device used and the level of vaping. Here are some average costs for the purchase of devices and nicotine e-liquid:
Vaping devices: Many people start with a simple pod device or a refillable tank. Typical cost is about $35-$50. Nicotine e-liquid: E-liquid for refillable devices can be purchased for $20 per 30ml bottle in Australia. A typical vaper uses 4ml e-liquid per day or 1,460 ml per year, which is 50 bottles. Replaceable pods cost $3-6 and deliver 200-300 puffs on average. The total cost of vaping (the refillable tank) is $1,150 per year.

How can I access vaping products from 1 March 2024?
Most Australian pharmacies can order selected nicotine vaping products. See the list of TGA-notified vaping products when you apply for an assessment/prescription. Some pharmacies supply products outside of this list. You will need a pharmacy e-script token for pharmacy vaping products.
What is tobacco harm reduction?
Quitting smoking and nicotine completely is clearly the most effective strategy for reducing the harm from smoking. However, smoking is a very powerful addiction and can be very hard to stop. Many smokers try and fail repeatedly to quit even with professional support and stop-smoking medications. Up to two in three continuing smokers will die prematurely from a smoking-related illness. Tobacco harm reduction refers to switching to a less harmful nicotine product for those who are not able to quit smoking or nicotine use. Nicotine is the main reason people continue to smoke but it has relatively minor health effects, except in pregnancy. The focus is on preventing harm and not on preventing the use of nicotine itself. Almost all the harm from smoking is caused by the thousands of toxins in smoke produced by burning tobacco. It is well known that ‘smokers smoke for nicotine but are killed by tar’. According to the UK Royal College of Physicians (p5), if nicotine could be delivered effectively and acceptably to smokers without smoke, most if not all of the harm of smoking could probably be avoided.
